Hazelnuts & Tree Fruits

Research and Extension

The North Willamette Research and Extension Center is home to the Orchard Crops Research and Extension Program led by Dr. Nik Wiman, which has a mandate to provide applied research and Extension for the Oregon hazelnut industry. The Orchards Program is dedicated to advancing hazelnut production in the Willamette Valley!

Our diverse research covers plant nutrition, soils, entomology, disease management, irrigation, horticulture, and precision agriculture - all aimed at solving grower challenges and improving hazelnut production across the region. We also work with other orchard crops including peaches, almonds and cider apples. We offer a number of workshops in any given year covering topics such as pruning, pest management, and cover crops.

The program proudly partners with hazelnut growers, industry leaders, crop consultants, and local agencies to keep Oregon’s hazelnut industry strong and innovative.
