Last fall, the College of Agricultural Sciences used social media to highlight the experiences of first-generation students, faculty, and staff, turning the digital platforms into spaces for storytelling, recognition, and encouragement.
Through a series of posts leading up to National First-Generation College Student Day on November 8, the campaign showcased members of the college community who were the first in their families to attend college.
Each feature included participants’ academic disciplines or professional roles alongside personal reflections and advice for other first-generation students. Undergraduate and graduate students, faculty members, and staff shared their insights, and rather than focusing solely on academic achievement, the campaign highlighted resilience, mentorship, and community support in their personal journeys.
First-generation students often face unfamiliar academic systems, financial pressures, and questions of belonging. Within the College of Agricultural Sciences, sharing those stories helped normalize those experiences while reinforcing that success takes many forms. The campaign served as both recognition and resource, offering visible examples of persistence and achievement.
